marius is on his deathbed when he hears it.
That is distinctly Enjolras’s exasperated sigh. It’s been directed at him enough times that he knows it well. “Marius, you’re late.”
“What’s wrong today?” Asks Combeferre.
Courfeyrac laughs, “You look as if you’ve seen a ghost.”
Grantaire: “Some wine and say what’s going on?”
Marius, with tears in his eyes, replies. “A ghost you say? A ghost, maybe. They were all just like ghosts to me. One minute there, and they were gone.”
Grantaire laughs. “I am agog; I am aghast! Shall Marius join us at last? I’ve never seen him so…” He trails off. “Old!”
Enjolras looks shyly at the old man. “I’m sorry for your lonely soul. But, did we reach our larger goal? Our little lives— did they count at all?”
Marius smiles. “Yes.”
